The school has been founded in 1972 and has been operating as a department of DELTA PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL and after 1990 as a department of BRITISH HELLENIC COLLEGE. Today it operates in Athens and also in other cities in Greece as a branch of the 4E EDUCATION AND TRAINING) educational company.


The name “Alexander the Great” has been given to commemorate the great spread of the Greek language, which followed the expedition of Alexander the Great up to India. Alexander the Great was the one to establish in Babylon the first organized school to teach Greek language and culture to non-Greeks, as stated by Plutarch.

Today we offer courses both face – to – face and ONLINE in:

Our educational programs include not only language lessons but also a lot other cultural activities to help students understand the greek way of life.

Among them are visits to museums, presentations about Greek Culture ( history, music, diet, language, celebrations etc.), participation in and projection of Greek movies, lessons of Greek dances, dinning out with teachers and students in the Greek way etc.

Since its first steps, the school has been involved in the development of educational material for the Greek language with books and educational software through the participation in many European Educational Programs in cooperation with European Universities and Schools.

Today these books are being published and distributed by ALPHA PUBLICATIONS.

4worldlovers: The Modern Greek Language Teaching Center of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has been functioning since the 1950s, initially with a very limited number of students. In the decades that followed the number of students increased exponentially. The Modern Greek Teaching Center is the largest of its kind in the world. Many of its graduates are today teachers of Modern Greek and Philology at Universities throughout the world, members of the diplomatic corps in their own countries, church leaders, renowned scientists, company managers, respected artists and business professionals.

The Centre is located in Mets, a residential area of central Athens, about 15 minutes walk from the heart of the city at Syntagma (Constitution) Square. Mets is well-served by public transportation by bus, metro, tram and trolley from many areas of Athens, and is perhaps the greenest area of the city, with parks nearby including the Zappeio and National Gardens, Pangrati Park, and the woods around the old Olympic Stadium where the first modern Olympics were held.


The Centre is affiliated with more than 20 American colleges and universities in offering diverse programs, including Semesters in Greece, summer arts programs, January terms, Maymesters, and other longer and shorter sessions throughout the year.

These university programs have traditionally emphasized Classical, Byzantine and modern Greek history and civilization. Without neglecting this heritage, the Centre also cooperates with departments as diverse as mathematics, geology, health care, and psychology, amongst others, to bring students to Greece on programs which look into the history of their discipline in ancient and modern Greece.

I didn’t know what to expect from this linguistic course but I certainly have not been disappointed! You have organized everything so nicely. We learned, ate, drunk, sang, swam, walked and a lot more all in good spirits. As a language teacher myself I really enjoyed the well-organized set up and the natural, friendly atmosphere. The well-planned yet so relaxing excursions immersed us not just in the beautiful sea but in the culture of this rich island of Chios. Thank you for sharing it all with us and for being so patient! The Alexandria Institute program is a fantastic way to study Greek. It offers solid grammatical information interwoven with stories and songs that bring the language to life. Andreas’ knowledge of local Chios history and the larger span of Greek history is vast and he gives generously of his wisdom. Emmi offered us many insights into everyday life in Greece and introduced us to the words that make up the interactions we can expect to have with others as we live and travel in Greece. Together they demonstrate exceptional skills as highly trained teachers, able to adapt the lessons to meet the needs of each student. All of this was part of a schedule that took us out of the classroom into the beauty of Chios where we experienced the best the island has to offer. Swimming, delicious traditional food and visits to historic sites enriched the program. And best of all, everything was seasoned with laughter and merriment. As a professional teacher I recommend these programs as some of the best I have experienced and I hope to continue my studies with Alexandria Institute in the future!

I really enjoyed these two weeks session in Paros. The lessons in small group between three and six students were a great opportunity to make great progress allowing easy participation of each student. The session is a mix of grammar, vocabulary, speaking, reading and... singing, which makes the sessions comprehensive, dynamic and enjoyable. The cultural part included a very interesting and an on-going excavation in Despotikon and much more. Great thanks to all the Alexandria Institute team!
